CRM workflow fails with "The caller was not authenticated by the service"

One of our customers has created a workflow that contains an action to create a Form if certain criteria are met. When it hits this step, it always fails with the error "The caller was not authenticated by the service". The Job Owner for the workflow is a user that has user and security role of System Administrator. I can log in as this user and create the same Form manually without any issue at all.

There don't appear to be any errors reported in the Windows Event Log and I can't find anything directly related in IIS logs either.

I've Googled this error and there are quite a lot of cases of it occurring as a result of development/customization work, but I can't find any where it's occurred during a workflow.

Has anyone got any ideas on why this might be occurring?

Thanks

    Can you clarify:

    • Is the Form a custom entity that is specific to you, or an entity from a 3rd party solution, or something else ?
    • Does the action call a custom workflow activity ?

Can you enable tracing - this should give more information on the error

Use Postman and try to call the same action with same payload and with same user. You will definitely benefit from it.

    Hi

Like David suggested enabling trace will help you to get to the actual error message.

This error message is normally returned by WCF service when it cant actually authenticate the user, for few reasons.

If the user can login to CRM via UI and do the same, i would check if there is any difference in the URL or domain when the Org Service is called via Workflow. Could you go to Settings -> Customization -> Developer Resource and check if the URL for the Org Service is different than the URL you are using to access CRM.

I would also use XrmToolBox (https://xrmtoolbox.com ), see if you can connect and execute queries from that as it uses Org Service to execute commands.

Check if you are using any third party service in Action.

It may be possible that owner of workflow does not have access on third party service.
