Inventory Close takes days to weeks

Hi all,

We have a problem after upgrading to Dynamics AX 2012 R2 -- Our first inventory close has taken almost 2 days already and still has the majority of inventory to process.  Any ideas on why this could be happening or something we could do to speed it up (create indexes, etc.)?

Thank you!

Ted

    Hi Ted,

There are lots of options and caused here. It could be caused by fragmented indexes or it is on AX itself. You said you upgraded to AX 2012 R2. What was your previous version?

Did you specified the number of helpers in the Inventory parameters? How many batch threads  are configured on your batch server settings?

What values were given in the closing options? (e.g. maximum throughputs?)

Do you have products with Bill of materials?

Hey Andre, thanks for your reply.  We upgraded from AX 2009 SP1.  We messed up and didn't specify any batch processing or helpers whatsoever.  But we closed the same way in another company and it took 1 minute for 300 items.  Now in this company it's taking over a minute PER item -- and we have over 20,000 items still to go.

For closing options we have a max throughput of 100 and a min throughput adjustment of 1.00.

We have 20,000 to 35,000 products with BOMs, about 7,000 of which are new since the last inventory close.  Could this affect the process this drastically?  Thank you for help!

    Hi Ted,

Using the batch and e.g. 4-8 helpers should be a bit quicker, but 1 second per item seems to be very slow.

There might be something with use of indexes or something else. It is really hard to tell without knowing more of your hardware, setup and possible virtualization of servers. I have worked at a customer having over 300000 items in AX2012. Due to the number of items and transaction they close every week. This is performing OK.

Thanks for the reply again Andre!  Turned out it was fragmented indexes -- we rebuilt the indexes on inventTrans and InventTransOrigin and then the remaining items finished in about an hour.  I had no idea that could have such a drastic effect.

    Hi Ted,

Thanks for the feedback. Fragmented indexes are really killing. Compare it with a manual. If you miss the index or it is not in a specific order, you would browse the complete manual...
