how to schedule multiple production resources on same operation to reduce lead time

I'd like to set up AX2012 so that scheduling will automatically add a second machine resource to the current operation when the required hours exceeds the capacity of the primary resource.    In other words, minimize the lead time through production rather than stretch out the time using only one machine.   I've tried this using a seconadry operation but AX just runs the secondary op for the same hours as the primary....it doesn't split the hours across both machines and thereby cut the clock time in half.   Any thoughts?

That does not really work, the question related to an exceeding of hours, but on no basis of the exceeding, perhaps capacity in a day, which would mean finite, but AX cannot dynamically add another resource, even within the group, as standard because an undefined amount of capacity has been used. The original post was basically if we have capacity of 8 hours on machine A today and the job takes 10 hours run the other 2 on the other resource. Adding in more resources would always split it, it is only when they need more based upon a capacity window would the second resource be needed. In most industries the planner looks at this and shifts lines etc.

    Hi Every one,

Go to -> Production control->Common->Production orders->All production orders-> In Action Pane select Production Details -> Select Route -> In Resource Requirement tab Change the Quantity of Resources

Guys, anyone has a solution for this situation? I think this is a basic requirement for most of the organization and i believe there should be a way to achieve this. Any thoughts?

    Hi Victor

Did you find solution to your problem?

I tried the below but it is loading only one resource ( I was expecting distribution of work to resources within the group).

Resource group ( Calendar 8 hours)

                   Resource A ( Same 8 hour calendar) – Finite capacity – Capability A

                   Resource B ( same 8 hours calendar) – Finite capacity – Capability A ( both same capability)

    Item FG

Routing has only one step – needs 8 hours run time for one quantity

Capability required = Capability A ( which both the above resources have)

    Production order

                   Required 3 quantities

Run operation scheduling and Job scheduling

Ax is only using one resource and using it for 3 days . whereas there is one idle resource with same capability which is not used.

I was expecting the work to end in 2 days ( Day 1 – both Resource 1 and Resource 2 being used and Day 2 – Resource 1 only)

    Regards

    Jagabandhu

    Hello Victor -

On the Route > Resource requirements tab > Quantity field, there is the ability to specify more than 1 resource.

When you increase the quantity, it should automatically reduce the run time. For instance, if the route is initially set to a process quantity of 1 unit per hour for 1 resource and you change it to 2 resources, it should reduce the run time to a 1/2 hour and keep the process quantity as 1.

The only problem I see with this and your scenario is the scheduling engine will always split the production order across multiple resources. you would have to change the route on a single production order if you only want it to split in certain instances.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for the input.  I have thought of what you are suggesting but it doesn't quite do what we need.   We've already put the resources into a group....but the job scheduling engine only chooses one of the resources and it will run it as long as needed to get the job done.   We'd like the scheduling engine to pick multiple resources, if available, so that the lead time is reduced.

Have you tried setting up a resource group?  It's my understanding that if you have multiple resources doing the same function, you can combine them in a resource group, attach that group to the operation, and schedule capacity across the entire group.
