AX 2012 R3 CU8 - Reservation

Hi,

As my title says i'm working in an AX 2012 R3 CU8 environment. I got a bit confused about the time reservations are made for sales and transfer orders.

I was practising in an Azure environment, and as far i had understood, it wasn't necessary to reserve items during the order processing because the reservation process can take place while releasing to warehouse.

I had read the following in WHS implementation guide (in the Location directives topic):

Reservas-02.PNG

Also according to the implementation guide there is the option to "Reserve at release to warehouse" in the Warehouses form which was not available anymore (think this might have changed with CU8 and the guide applies to CU7, but not sure):

 Reservas-03.PNG

The new option available now is "Reserve when orders are released by a batch job".

So, according what i had read, i thought i could avoid doing manual or automatic reservations at order processing because it was done during the release to warehouse process.

I have tryed releasing orders from the three ways available: manually each one from the "Release to warehouse" button on the orders, the job from the warehouse management module in the periodic folder and also the "Release to warehouse form" in the common folder of the warehouse management module where i can add lines from different orders and then release them.

In my Azure environment i was able to release the orders from the three ways above mentioned without doing any manual or automatic reservations.

When i started working in a customer's environment i noticed that i wasn't able to release orders unless the items were previously reserved (manual or automatic).

I started to compare my setups on the Warehouses, Location directives, work templates but found nothing. No check box was checked on my warehouses form at any of both environments.

Up to now, i found out that i could check the "Reserve when orders are released by a batch job" and process the release job from the periodic folder and the reservations are done at that time (that's the same for both environments, Azure and my customers')

However, when i tryed to use the "Release to warehouse form" (the one in the common area, which i found very useful) i saw that the field "Quantity available to reserve" was 0 in both environments. Despite that, everytime i tryed to add the line to be released in my Azure environment, i was able and the reservation was made at that time (before releasing the lines add in the lower pane). But, when i tryed to do the same at my customer environment, i got a message telling me that the quantity needs to be reserved.

I hope someone could give me an explanation of this process clearly. I thought i had understood that but the different results i got at different environments made me think i'm missing something (maybe a parameter).

The release to warehouse form is the one which makes me hesitate, has anybody tryed this? Is there anyway to the reservation to be made after adding and releasing the lines?

I will appreciate any help, thanks for your time!

    Hi NHNC,

Are you aware of the Reservation whitepaper for AX 2012 R3? Maybe you find your answer here. www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

If not, please update. Then I will read the question more caeefulla later on...

Hi. That 'Release to warehouse' form is new to me. Thanks for pointing it out. But it seems to me that it only wants to release sales order where the inventory is reserved. I tried releasing a sales order without reservations and got an error that included "... Either the quantity is not physically reserved or the quantity has already been added for release.". I'm sure you know that there's an Accounts receivable parameter that'll set sales order lines to automatically reserve when you create the line - so it looks to me as if you need that, if you're going to do manual release. But I think automatic release using the batch job is a better option - and after I'd been shown how to do that I wrote it up on our website: www.adaptable.co.nz/.../backorder-sales-order-lines-in-ax-2012-r3. Hope that helps.

I'm surprised about that. The Release to warehouse button on the ribbon bar of the Sales order form doesn't do any reservation. I think of the three methods you mention, only the batch job can auto-reserve inventory.

A fourth option exists. You can add a sales order to a Load without reserving inventory. You can see from the parameter on the Warehouse form that it is also possible for a Load to reserve inventory automatically. This is only useful, in my opinion, if you are planning on using Loads.

Hi, thanks all of you for your answers!

André, i had already heard about the Reservation Guide. I've already read it and found it very useful to understand better the new concept of reservation hierarchy. However, i didn't find any information about what i'm asking here. Thank you!

Tim, i started getting the same error as you when trying to release through the release to warehouse form while working on my customer environment. That's when i started to have a closer look to the way i had been working before and noticed that in the same situation (when the quantity available to release was 0) i was able to add that line to the lower pane and the reservation was made at that time (before releasing, what i found quite strange). Think the only way will be using the batch job. I will read your website, thank you!

GuyTerry, it's very interesting what you said about that fourth option, i couldn't understand which situation that parameter in the warehouse form would apply to (thought it was releated to the wave processing, because that is the time when loads are created however as the first step is the releasing to warehouse, that failed). Do you have any idea about what happened with that load later? I meant, if i have understood you well, you are telling me that i can add the sales order lines to the load without being reserved. What happened later with the wave processing? The lines that are already loaded are ignored, right? At least, they are not loaded again but works are created, aren't them? Thanks for your help.

Adding a sales order to a load doesn't in itself mean that the sales order is 'loaded' (and picked). It means that, after the order is picked it will become part of this load.

I've not yet needed to use Loads, but I believe that once you add some part of a sales order to a load, you trigger the wave processing by releasing the load.

Thank you Tim! Very helpful indeed! I will be testing this today, but the functionality looks exactly like what I have been trying to setup.
