No problem in the Azure VM with VS2015.

Azure VM, VS2015

However, in our on-prem install, VS2017 fails to recognize the rnrproj type project files from DevOps.

On-prem, VS2017  Dynamics 365 Developer Toolkit is installed as per. https://community.dynamics.com/365/b/dynamics365fordevelopers/posts/install-dynamics-365-developer-toolkit-with-visual-studio-2017

I assume I am missing an extension but don’t know which one.  I appreciate any assistance offered.

    Hi Rodney Rau,

You can't use this tool for working with D365FO, It's for CRM.

You must use a virtual machine provided by Microsoft with F&O development environment pre-installed for you. Deploy it to Azure (from LCS) or download a virtual hard-disk (.vhd file) and set up a local virtual machine.

    Hi Rodney,

You are looking at post about Dynamics 365 CRM developer tools. For development in Dynamics 365 F&O, you can download the VHD from LCS and host it on Hyper-V. Visual Studio 2017 is pre-loaded and the D365 F&O extensions are pre-configured in the VHD.

Please check this link for more details as to how you can deploy and access development environments.
