NAV 2013 R2 performance issues

Dear All,

I have some big performance issues problems using dynamics nav 2013 r2. The database size is approximal 150gb but both the sql server (2012 64 bit) and the 2 application servers are on virtuals machines with SSD disks.

So from the hardware counterpart, I am pretty confident that I cannot have a better hardware.

So the issue seems on the server / installation.  For example, the Item card (page ID 30) needs near 5 seconds to be opened and  usable in modify.

When I search using "Document No" in ILE table it took nearly 20 seconds.

I used the profiler and find that some indexes are missing, I add them but unfortunately the problem still persist.

I have gone through the onnipotent google but the proposed modification on the keys didn't help.

Did someone had the same issues?

Piero

Honestly I do not support the idea to put SQL database on a VM, as it is difficult to deal with hardware optimization. I got used to manipulate filegroups for hot tables and tempdbs by placing them on different physical discs, analyzing performance; having this on VM would tie you to VM resource usage of hardware.

My experience is, only do the backup of the db, without any indexing jobs and whatever can be made on the sql backup.

Additionally a log backup hourly, which cuts the log after running.

I only can compare with my largest table which is fixed assets with 150k records. And it just takes seconds to export the whole table to Excel. Searching is no problem at all.

the maintenance plan run correctly every night but if you have some suggestion I would be glad to ear it.

The configuration of the sql server have been done by my Microsoft Certified Partner... The CPU is one wiht 4 core and the RAM is 64gb.

IMHO a sql server should not be installed on a vm. And one CPU with 32  gig ram is way to less. I would start at that point. Another critical point are the sql maintenance plans. If they are configured wrong, it slows nav down badly.

I found a little workaround even it it seems to me that the performances could be greatly empowered.

I change the way the virtual machines acces to the san disk. The access was signed as normal. I changed for both the nav servers and the sql server the access to high priority and I had a great improvement.

Here is my two cents. Even If I had the feeling that it could be improved better.

The two nav server uses 3.5gb out of total 16gb available so no problem on that side.

Concerning the db server no problem at all with the disks.

6 mln records for ILE table does not sound much. As I believe you have your hardware in good order, there should be an issue on your database side. First, check what are the customizations done to the database, especially the added fields and the logic that is put on those. Perchance there has been added a weird flowfield that has too complex logic.

Log onto your Application Server (the middle-ware server where the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Server service is running). Open Server Manager and use the Tools drop down, then click on Resource Monitor. Once you have Resource Monitor running go to the Memory tab and look at the Used Physical Memory graph to see if the memory usage is totally pegged at the top or if there is plenty of memory left unused. Let us know what you see.

Another quick check is to open the Database Server (where the SQL Server database is) and open File Explorer and check the disk space on your drives to make sure none of them are full. Provide us the feedback and the community can diagnose this further.

Did you check process on both (Database & NAV Server)?

How much memory & CPU usage is using both server?

Try to restart both server and check your activity is taking same time to open and check also same activity on server side like as database & NAV.
