Version Control check out issue.

Hi there,

I would like to check an element out, but that option is disabled.

1, I add an element to the VC by selecting the element in the AOT.

2, By using right clicks, I checked in my element. The text went bold.

I believe that I skip some step, because the option like check in, check out, history, get latest and undo check out is disabled.

Could you tell me how to check an element out?

RE: Version Control check out issue.

You see that you can't checkout the file, because you're VCS things it hasn't been added to VCS. Then the question (which I already asked) is whether it's been added to VCS or not. That will tell you which part is broken.

Also, I see that your repository is stored in a network folder, which isn't supported. I recommend switching to a local folder.\

I think you really should look at how your custom VCS provider adds the support for shared environments. It's a bit tricky and I've seen implementations that were fundamentally wrong. I may be the case here as well.

One more question. How to delete an object that I Add to version control so I can use the same name again?

When it is checked-in you can do a delete from your AOT tree. It wil be a pending delete, so go to pending objects a checkin the object to fulfil the delete action.

RE: Version Control check out issue.

If it's a pending "Add" operation, the object hasn't been added to version control yet, so you can't check it out.

If it's a pending update, you can't check out the object because it's already checked out.

In either case, there is nothing to check out. You can either undo the operation, or get the latest version (for existing objects). It's the usual logic of TFS; nothing specific to AX.

Let me ask some explicit questions:

    1) What exactly do you mean by "I can't check out the object for some reason"? What exactly happens if you try it?

    2) After you try to check in the object to TFS, is it really added to TFS? If it stays as a pending change, it's not checked in. It maybe you caused by a bug in your non-standard VCS provider.

RE: Version Control check out issue.

Thank you for the link. I went to Version control > Pending Objects  and I still have there some object in the list . Is that can be the reason why I can't check out an object that I already checked in into TFS?

    I did that :

First modify the object than right click and click "Add to version control". It should give you a info log and the object will be checked out and will give you a blue color in the AOT tree.

Then I checked in the object and add there Description and the color change to the black bold and I can't check out the object for some reason.

One more question. How to delete an object that I Add to version control so I can use the same name again?

RE: Version Control check out issue.

    Hi Petr,

First of all welcome to the exciting world of Dynamics AX.

You can only add new or modified objects in the AOT tree to version control. Default objects that are not modified can't be checked-in into TFS.

First modify the object than right click and click "Add to version control". It should give you a info log and the object will be checked out and will give you a blue color in the AOT tree.

    Good luck!

Thank you Martin for helping me.

I am new in AX so to get this information that missing that will be for me for brand new topics. Anyhow right now thanks to you, I now  more about VC than before so that is the positive side.

RE: Version Control check out issue.

You don't add elements to version control by selecting them, you have to use Add to version control, unless your Team Foundation Server (Shared), whatever it is, somehow does it for you in the background.

The standard integration with TFS doesn't support shared environments, therefore Team Foundation Server (Shared) seems to be a customization to allow it - and it probably isn't implemented correctly. I can't comment on it without knowing how it works.

I also don't know what you see in the context menu if you try to work with such objects, whether the objects are in TFS or not, what's the status of files in the working directory and so on. Too much missing information.

RE: Version Control check out issue.

I try to be more specific.

Some elements I add to the VC by selecting the element in the AOT, but never check in.
Some elements I add to the VC by selecting the element in the AOT and check in.

Some elements I don't add to the VC.

Is that can be the reason why I can't check out an elements that I previously check in?
