Sales Line item level dimensions

I have a client who is a service-based business.  They invoice once per month.  They may be invoicing services performed by various technicians.  They need to be able to report the sales for each technicians.  I was hoping Dimensions could be used at the sales line item level but it looks like it is at the sales invoice level.  Is this something that may be available in the future? They are trying to avoid having to set up several items for the same service.

    Hi AJ,

I'm assuming that this works the same way in the Purchase invoice too

The case that I have is that my client needs to allocate a purchase invoice with only one line Item between 2 values on the same dimension

For example,  lets say that the invoice is for 1000 consulting service

He wants to allocate $500 to department 1 , and $500 to department 2 (Departments are represented as a dimension)

how can we achieve this scenario?

Is there anything in the setup of the dimension that I can use, or any workaround?

    Thank

    Ola

RE: Sales Line item level dimensions

    Hi SLee_80,

My earlier response (and Jennifer's, as I read it) was around the use of dimensions at the line level during data entry.

Your most recent question is about reporting, which involves reading from posted tables. There is an out of the box report called Sales History which shows Sales by Item, but it will not show the Dimensions used.

    You can either:

    1. Modify that report by building a Custom Report Layout in Word, or, for more flexibility,
    2. Use Web Services to expose the Item Ledger Entries page (Page 38), and use the ODATA URL in Excel or Power BI Desktop / PowerBI.com to build a report of all Item sales by Dimension. Be sure to filter on Entry Type = Sale.

If you haven't used ODATA feeds in Dynamics 365 for Financials before, you will need the ODATA URL for the published web service from the Web Services page. You will also need to know your user name (see the User Name field on the User Card), and for a password, you will need your Web Service Access Key (unique for each user; you can create it / view it from the User card as well).

I hope this helps. If my response has answered your question, please take a moment to verify it by clicking Yes next to "Did that answer your question?"

RE: Sales Line item level dimensions

I have tried this but can't find a sales report to print by sales line item dimension.  When I add a sort by dimension, it only pulls from the sales invoice header - not line item.  Is there a report that will show sales by line item dimension either in Sales or Items?

    Hello,

One other suggestion to accomplish this is to right click on any column header for the line items and select "Choose Columns". Here you can mark a checkbox to add Dimension columns so you can enter them directly on the line.  You can also remove columns that you aren't using.

    Regards,

    Hi again SLee_800,

Au contraire, my friend! You can definitely use Dimensions at the line level.

When in a Sales Order or Sales Invoice, highlight the line for which you want to assign dimensions, click on LINE in the ribbon (under a grouping called Lines), then click on Dimensions. This will show you any existing Dimension Values inherited from the header. You can either override those values for the selected line, or add new dimension values that may not be assigned at the header level.

I've included a screenshot below to guide you:

    I hope this helps!
