Dynamics 365 API Access and Fees

Hi,

We are currently using Microsoft Dynamics 365 and are considering integrating our D365 data with an external platform via API.

Could you please confirm whether Dynamics 365 provides API access that allows us to retrieve data such as sales, orders, inventory, and other relevant business data from our current D365 environment?

We would also appreciate it if you could advise on:

  • Whether API access is available under our current Dynamics 365 subscription/license
  • Whether there are any additional fees for using the API
  • If applicable, the pricing structure or usage limits for API access

Thank you. Will look forward to your reply.

Which D365 product are you using? The D365 brand covers quite a few things, such as Finance and Operations, Business Central or Customer Engagement.

Yes, there are APIs available to export data. You have several options; which one is the best depends on your particular requirements. Let me mention the main ones:

    • Data entities can be accessed through OData services.

    • You can also expose them as Dataverse virtual entities and consume them through Dataverse APIs.

    • For more efficient export of large data sets, you can export entities through data management APIs.

    • You may export data to a data warehouse (Azure Data Lake, BYOD) and read it from there.

There is no extra costs I can think of for the APIs as such (but there would be some if you wanted a data warehouse).

In addition to Martins response, in most cases data is integrated (in and out) using data entities which are defined in the application layer of F&O. Although there are quite a few out of the box data entities available for importing and exporting data, they will probably not cover all the business requirements out of the box. It is however possible to modify existing data entities or to create new data entities.

Yes D365FO provides std Odata REST API for most of these business data and other integration options such as Custom Services, Batch Data API, Business Events, and Dual-write depending on the use case. The standard OData endpoint supports CRUD operations.

    • Whether API access is available under our current Dynamics 365 subscription/license: Yes
    • Whether there are any additional fees for using the API: No additional charge for using the standard D365FO OData APIs themselves.
    • If applicable, the pricing structure or usage limits for API access: Microsoft applies service protection limits to protect the D365FO service. API consumers may receive throttling responses if usage is excessive. There are Microsoft documents these limits.
