Define multiple GL Account Categories

(0) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by 5

Dear Dynamics Community,

I'm new to this forum so I apologise if this question was already discussed (I did not find it in my search).

As new d365 users, we are trying to define financial report structures which would serve different purposes. I understand the functionality of Main Account Categories, but I assume there is an option to add multiple definitions/attributes on GL level, as the same accounts should go into various categories depending on the report purpose (audit accounts, management accounts, tax authority etc.).

Currently, the only other option I'm familiar with is to define ranges in the report itself, but in case the the undelying structure changes, new accounts might not be captured in the report, so additional checks would potentially consume a significant amount of time.

Is there an option to add anything similar on GL level to be able to put the same account into different groups depending on the report?

Thank you, kind regards, Neven

    Hello Neven,

There is a 1:1 relationship between a main account and a main account category.

If you need to design different financial reports then you can simply create different row structures in the financial report designer where an account category is assigned to a different financial report line.

An alternative to the use of those main account categories are financial dimensions. Yet, think carefully how you use them because the number of findims that you can include in a voucher is limited.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

    Dear Ludwig,

thank you for your quick reply and explanation.

I understand the reasoning behind the 1:1, but it makes it a bit difficult to adapt reports for different purposes. However, your explanation did open a new solution, I guess we can define the Main Category on a more detailed level so we can move them across reports instead of individual accounts (and we can manually adjust for any exceptions).

    Thank you, best, Neven.
