ReIndex in AX and Rebuild/ReOrg Index in SQL Server (AX 2009) - do we need both ?

Hi, do we need to have both scheduled (this is for AX 2009) :

1. ReIndex in AX and

2. Rebuild / ReOrg Index based on the threshold in SQL Server

Is it necessary to have both in place ?

Hi Santosh,

ReIndex in AX, I believe, would drop the index and rebuild. You would probably want to schedule a down time for that.

Rebuild index in SQL is basically the same thing. On the other hand, ReOrganize is different that it's an online operation where the index are still accessible for the application. You are also free to terminate the ReOrganization anytime without the penalty of rollback the process.

So my answer to your question would be you only need one of them and doing it in SQL is the preferred way if you have the know-how.

thanks for your response Dominic. Yes we do have weekly scheduled SQL job in place to do either Reindex/ReOrg based on the fragmentation criteria.
