How can I specify the build order for models so that a 'build all' succeeds first time?

On a fairly newly downloaded VM, if I get the latest sources from VSTS (to get hotfix changes etc.) and execute Build Models, simply selecting everything, the build invariably fails as the order of model building seems incorrect. That is, models seem to be built before their referenced models so changes are not picked up. Usually, a second build of everything succeeds, but this at least doubles the time.

Is there some way to specify the order of building everything so referenced models get built first? Have I missed as option somewhere?

It should work out of the box, therefore you should report it to Microsoft.

The right order is already defined by references.

    Hi Martin

I got a reply from a developer at our partners which said:

The automated build machines have logic to process Modules in dependency order but the manual build from Visual Studio does not. Your options are multipass compile/ inspect dependencies and manually compile in sequence required / cobble a powershell script together from what the build agent does on build machines.

He then pointed me to where I might find some scripts on the build machine which would help to construct a script to run on the local VM.

Are you saying that the Build Models option in Visual Studio should respect the dependency order?

The experience of both myself and our partners is that this doesn't happen; his comment was "having to trigger two compiles in the background hasn’t annoyed me enough yet to allocate time for writing the script".

Where would I report this as an issue? Reporting via LCS doesn't seem the right path.

    Thanks

Well, maybe it indeed doesn´t work, but it still sounds like a bug to me.

I've logged it on the Connect feedback page.
