Let me just chip in a bit. The X comes from the predecessor "Concorde XAL". The reminder was carefully chosen to not resemble anything else out there. You can read more about the naming, and other history in this book:

Yes, I explained that (after I helped  Ahmed to formulate his question), that's why my reply is marked as the verified answer.

I'm sorry you don't like my joke about zen.

Thats kind of a jerk response Martin, you should be more polite, he is obviously asking for the meaning of the acronym of AX.

No. Axapta is not a danish word.
What I've heard rumours about is that internally in Damgaard Data they had a small competetion between the employees about who could come up with a good name for the product, but I am not sure that this is correct.

    I found:

    and

    http://www.opensubscriber.com/message/axapta-knowledge-village@yahoogroups.com/4307341.html

That might shed a little light on the origins of the name 'Axapta'.

I understood the history behind AX / Axapta but the question still remains that what was the meaning of the term axapta? is it an acronym or a danish word. i am not able to find any traces of its origin on the net. please share if any one knows.

    Not entirely true.

Damgaard Data and Navision merged their businesses under the brand Navision and a couple of years later Microsoft bought Navision.

In Denmark where both companies were founded we sometimes refer to the products formerly branded as "Navision" as "Old Navision" and then of course you *could* call the AX family "New Navision". :)

AX is short for 'Axapta' which is the name the first developing company give the ERP.

    Short history:

Damgaard a Danish company created an ERP called 'Axapta'.

Navision bought the solution and called it 'Navision Axapta'. And marketed it next to its own ERP 'Navision'

Microsoft bought Navision (and some other ERP products) and 'Navision Axapta' became 'MBS Axapta'.

This all happened in version 1 till 3

After that Microsoft rebranded all its ERP solutions to the 'Dynamics' family of today.

'Navision' became 'Dynamics Nav' and 'MBS Axapta' became 'Dynamics Ax'.

    Hopefully this explains it all.

"AX" is not any official name, it's how people shorten Dynamics AX. And the "AX" in "Dynamics AX" is an abbreviation of the name of the original product, Axapta, before Microsoft bought it and re-branded as Dynamics.

Other Dynamics products have similar history, e.g. Navision -> Dynamics NAV and Solomon -> Dynamics SL.
