Unknown dictionary error

Posted on by 340

A user's workstation 'hung', several times. The user shut down the computer. On the second iteration, she is now receiving an 'Unknown Dictionary' error.

There were no changes to the environment, so the [problem cannot be a bad path etc. What else could be causing this issue, and should be considered?

It appears the Dynamics.set file is not being read to get the path to the dictionaries.

    RE: Unknown dictionary error

    That is correct.

It is especially important to get all users logoff from GP at the end of the day when using a Terminal Server or Citrix server..

Set some group policies on the TS side to logoff completely user sessions when they're disconnected for more than a few hours (i.e. 4 or 6hrs).

Every GP sessions will lock some shared files and that might cause issues if the session is disconnected from the user side.

I'd advise to purchase some add-ons to GP like Rockton Toolbox or WinthropDC GP PowerTools, as they have a function that can gracefully close idle running GP user sessions that forgot to logoff after a pre-defined time.

    RE: Unknown dictionary error

Here's what I did to solve this problem:

User sees Unknown Dictoinary Error upon login attempt:

NOTE:  Web search talks about copying Dynamics.set – that’s for an old version of GP

Problem:  some user did not log out last night.

    Solution:  Kill their orphan session.

Access GP on the GP database server.

Administration/User Activity (log in with low security password, not SA) – find the offending user, Delete from menu

We have GP on a terminal server for the users.

    Log into the terminal server.

Open task manager / Users tab, find offending user and right click/sign off. Give it a minute to complete.

Users are now able to log into GP on the terminal server successfully.
