RE: Business Central Backup and Restore

    Hi, just adding some info.

    Using the exported data:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/business-central/dev-itpro/administration/tenant-admin-center-database-export#using-the-exported-data

"While you can import the downloaded BACPAC file into your own SQL Server instance, Microsoft does not provide support for creating a working on-premises environment from the BACPAC that you download from Business Central online."

Freddy once had a solution to mount to Docker Container.

    https://freddysblog.com/2019/11/12/mounting-a-database-backup-from-my-online-environment-inside-a-container/

    Hope this helps as well.

    Thanks.

RE: Business Central Backup and Restore

The database exports you do from BC online can only be used for an on-premise restore.

If you by Azure means that you are running BC Online then new migration to online is needed after on-premise restore.

If you run your on-prem hosted in Azure then you can restore it like it is a local on-prem.

There is no other backup service for Business Central online, Normally you would not need a backup of BC Online because you can go back 30 days to a point in time, given there has not been and upgrade in that period.

But once you have done your db export you can of course backup that file to any backup service you prefer to use.

I appreciate all of the discussion and information here. One question I have based on a request, is there some recommendation/alternative for backing up outside of Azure? If we export the database (create database export), can that be used to restore to azure, or only locally? (I don't believe this can be done without restoring it on-premise, then migrating to online). Is there some other "outside of Azure" database backup option/service?

I wish Microsoft support was more consistent with this. The response I received was that its categorically impossible.  My upgrade date was only 3 days ago so the backup is not from that long ago

Not that it is helping you in any way. But at least the response you got from Microsoft was in according with what they write in their official documentation.

From Admin Center is not possible after an upgrade (point in time restore starts from the upgrade date). From support ticket this is possible but not guaranteed (MS will not preserve the backups indefinitely).

so is BB_BC's post above mine incorrect then? He states that if you put in a support ticket with Microsoft they can restore a backup from before the upgrade.

    [/quote]

Yes, it is my understanding that that statement is incorrect.

Maybe if a disaster hit Microsoft will be able to do such an operation but not under normal circumstances.

Here are some information regarding the backup service for Business Central

    docs.microsoft.com/.../tenant-admin-center-backup-restore

    docs.microsoft.com/.../service-overview

And you have gotten the correct information from Microsoft. You are only able to restore to the same major/minor version that you are running on as stated in the documentation.

Did anyone experience this recently? I tried contacting Microsoft support and they told me they are unable to restore a backup from before the upgrade
