I can think of several possible reason to pause, but whether it matters and how to handle it depends on many things.
However I assume that rescheduling is part of the solution you need.
Before you perform any production order updates set your user default values.
Process > End form, - press the Default values button and check the user setting.
You enforce some of these rules on the Status tab of your Production Control Parameters (which can be set by Site, as well as by company):
Go to go to Production Control Parameters and in the matrix check the relevant stage you are at, Then go to the Production Order and try to Re-schedule the s order. Then go back and reset the parameters or it will be a permanent parameter change.
Not knowing your version or any of your set ups, or reason for this requirement etc, do test before trying in live.

Can you specify what you mean exactly by 'pause'?
Do you want to pause the whole production order for a while or only a specific operation?
For how long do you plan to pause, etc.
Would be great if you could provide more details.
