Will Business Central / Navision become end of life in near future

We are evaluating Navision / Business Central to implement a standard product for a specific industry.

We have analyzed the BC platform regarding the tool set and the framework features. We have seen that we would need to invest considerable in development (creating new tables, AL coding etc.).

These expectations lead us to try to evaluate the longevity of the platform. We just saw the change from Dynamics 365 NAV to Business Central, we saw the roadmap with first focusing on AL, then Web Client etc. We also see integration of Dynamics 365 Sales with BC. So it seems to be one part of the whole Dynamics 365 roadmap.

At the same time, we see that BC is quite separated listed on https://dynamics.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/ or that Business Central is actually on the last position in the dropdown menu "Applications" on https://dynamics.microsoft.com/en-us/.

So it appears to be quite separated from the other Dynamics 365 ecosystem.

What the the "feelings" of the community and the official statements (by Microsoft) related to BC and Dynamics 365 ecosystem? That would help us greatly at this point in our decision finding.

RE: Will Business Central / Navision become end of life in near future

I am partner; and read documentation, road map etc. often. The following is my own understanding. It does not represent any sort of ownership or authenticated statement.

If you look at other applications such as Dynamics 365 sales and Dynamics 365 customer engagement, you may find that there are two levels of offerings. One of them is professional. This is geared towards smaller organizations. There is no such offerings related with Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations. I believe that small and medium businesses (SMB) should choose Dynamics 365 Business Central for their finance and operations needs. However, you cannot buy more than 300 licenses for business central because you should buy Dynamics 365 finance and operations for a bigger company.

I believe that business central will continue to involve in SMB category, while finance and operations will continue to serve enterprise grade customers (more than 300 employees). Discontinuation of Business Central will create a  hole as far as SMB offering is concerned. Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations is too complicated for SMBs to implement and use. If you are developing a product to serve the organizations with more than 300 employees, Business Central may not work as per the current licensing terms. It is a good product for SMBs though.

Additionally, I have not read anywhere that dictates that Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations will create its own trimmed version to replace Business Central to cater small and medium segment.

Hopefully we might get a better feedback sooner from someone from Microsoft here to rectify my statements.
