Is Business Central webhook reliable?

I've managed to subscribe to 2 BC webhooks, salesInvoices and salesOrders but I keep noticing that sometimes I don't get notifications or I receive them with a long delay. This is true especially in the afternoon (UK time).

Another issue in the last days is that a webhook subscription may disappear. For example this morning I was receiving notifications from salesOrders, the expiration date/time was  "expirationDateTime": "2026-02-20T09:34:12Z", that is in 3 days (today it's 2026-02-17). Now, if I check the subscriptions via api/v2.0/subscriptions I see only salesInvoices, while salesOrders has disappeared. Moreover, if I try to subscribe again nothing happens.

Does this happen frequently? Has anyone had the same experience?

BC webhooks work, but they’re not truly real-time reliable, especially during peak hours. Delays in the afternoon UK time are pretty common in my experience. They’re event-driven, but there’s still queueing on Microsoft’s side.

The disappearing subscription usually happens when the endpoint fails validation or returns anything other than a clean 2xx response, even intermittently. Timeouts, auth issues, or repeated delivery failures can cause BC to silently drop the subscription, even if the expiration date hasn’t passed. I’d double-check your endpoint logs and the exact response from the subscription POST call. Sometimes it looks successful but isn’t.

In production setups I’ve worked on, we never rely only on BC webhooks. We use them as a trigger, but we also run a scheduled reconciliation job to poll for changes as a backup. That way if a notification is delayed or missed, nothing breaks long term.

Hi, There is currently no known issue with this problem.
You can submit a SR to Microsoft and ask them to assist in the investigation.
PS: Working with webhooks in Dynamics 365 Business Central

    Hi,
I experienced the same issue.but not it happened frequently. So Business Central webhooks are not 100% reliable for real-time data.

    Thanks

    Hello,

Webhook delays and disappearing subscriptions aren’t considered normal, but they do happen — usually due to endpoint issues or load behavior, not a platform-wide bug. If your webhook endpoint returns anything other than HTTP 2xx, responds slowly, times out, or has intermittent SSL/network issues, Business Central can silently disable or remove the subscription even before its expiration time. Afternoon UK delays are often related to peak EU load; webhooks are near real-time but not guaranteed immediate or exactly-once delivery. Also, subscriptions can disappear if renewal fails or the environment is recycled. Best practice is to treat webhooks as triggers only: log everything, always return 200 quickly, monitor subscriptions proactively, and implement a periodic safety sync using lastModifiedDateTime filtering so you never rely solely on webhook delivery.

@SamikK The answer was very useful. There was indeed something wrong in the endpoint and it was randomly working. I agree that webhooks must be relied on with a pinch of salt. Thank you
