Dexterity and DSCCS

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

I've installed Dexterity and DSCCS from the GP2018 R2 image.  I'm on a single machine and need to upgrade some GP code.  When I'm filling out the Options window, using provider Generic and Root Directory: localhost, I can't get my project folder to show where I think it should be.

I know it is installed, because the service is running.  I searched the entire drive and could not find srcsafe.ini, and there is nothing in the programs about anything related to SourceSafe.

Where can I find out what the root path is?

    Cindy,

Within Dexterity under Edit > Options... > Source Control you can point to the Generic provider and point to your source file from there.  Using that method to upgrade a customization should be no different than pointing DSCCS to the Generic folder and then pointing Dex to DSCCS in this same Source Control tab.

I should also mention that you may not be able to use the TFS provider within Dexterity without at least having DSCCS installed since that will lay down some files/registry keys that the TFS provider needs.

Almas (above) mentioned the same thing.  When I checked the Integration Guide, the upgrade section is still using DSCCS (and looks exactly the same it always has).

Is there documentation somewhere on how to upgrade without using DSCCS?

    Hi Cindy

In the later versions of Dexterity, you don't actually need the DSCCS installed. The Dexterity environment works without the extra component.

If using the Generic mode, there will not be a srcsafe.ini file as that file is only used if you are using a Microsoft Visual Source Safe repository.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I searched the entire drive for that file.  I also searched through the registry for dsccs.  No luck with either.

I'm not sure if we'd be able to tell you where the srcsafe.ini file is on your environment, as everyone is going to have it in a different location and there isn't any 'default' location like we could mention if we were talking about the Dex.ini, for example.

Researching, I did see it mentioned that since srcsafe.ini is a file in the file system, you should be able to find it like any other file, i.e. using the search box in Windows Explorer, have you tried that at all?

Maybe others here in the Community have some other options to help find the file?

    Thanks

This is for Dexterity development. I have always used DSCCS before. I do not have access to visual basic studio.

You can also upgrade without using DSCCS,what kind of customization you are looking to upgrade?
