Financial reporting - accounts data required

(0) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by 506

I've had a request from Finance dept to see how best to create certain reports.

They want to pull the value / main transactions, for each period, of all accounts starting 7... and 9... on  a per Dept basis.

I realise this is limited info but it is possible to suggest options based on this description?

I can ask more specific questions of them if this will help.

They are wanting to handle this data in an ad-hoc manner so possibly some fairly crude data dump is enough.

At the moment we have not touched Management Reporter.

For my part I have created quite a few custom SSRS reports.

Thanks

    Few options:

    1. Management reporter which is good to invest your time there as this is the future direction of ax

    2. Traditional financial report. No need customize and no need so much learning curve. As it is built in report the data is feeding directly from ax DB so no potential data sync issue as Management reporter

    3. Ssrs which is your domain. Try to use dimensionfocusbalance table

    4. BI / SSAS with Dynamics ax

Well if you don't have any background then it's okay as you can run wizard to deploy SSAS.

User then can connect from Excel data is already in pivot format very Dynamics

This is my second choice after Management reporter

In future I believe SSAS will be replaced by power BI though in my opinion POWER BI integration WITH ax 2012 not great .

    5. Power BI

IT is good to invest your knowledge if you have road map to upgrade ax or start to think implementing business intelligence

SSAS is absolutely NOT going to be replaced with PowerBI.

While PowerBI supports some ETL features, it is not potent enough to handle +10GB datasets.

Also SSAS includes Tabular which is the technology PowerBI relies on.

PowerBI is sufficient for small dataset and simple dashboard, please do not use it as a BI tool, whether it is D365 or AX2012.

For just frond end it is great and for some live tiles in D365.

If only an adhoc dump is required, I recommend a direct dump from SQL, however take in mind the 1 million row limit from Excel.

However, if the datasets are very large, consider building a small DWH and SSAS cube. This is ideal for financial slicing and dicing. There is also a standard GL cube which you can deploy from AX if you dont want the development hassle.

Management Reporter is also an option, however it is very static compared to SSAS. In my opnion it lacks the dynamic for indepth analyses.(Going to Posting Types etc.)
