GP 18.3.1233, MFA and "Unknown Error"

Hey Everyone:

I've been through the forums in detail, I've checked the MS documents website, and I can't find anything on this specific topic.  I'm getting the ever-so-informative "unknown error" when trying to authenticate through Active Directory on GP 18.3.1233.  I've confirmed that I've set up the app registration in AD (twice) and I've confirmed that my user has access to do this as well as had the AD administrator grant access to the app for the organization in general - no dice.  Specifically, any time that it tries to authenticate through AD, it blows the "unknown error".  When I try to apply the application ID through the front end, no dice.  When I apply it through SQL, then try to authenticate in the program - no dice.

I've followed the PDF of "common email issues" - no dice.  I've tried confirming my Exchange version (15.20.3890.28) so that's not it.  I've tried pretty much anything I know how to do (which, when it comes to AD, is not much.)  I'm hoping that one of you very smart people might be able to help?

Thanks!

-J

PS I never actually GET to emailing anything.  It simply will not authenticate.

PPS I've even deleted all entries on SY04920, just in case they needed to refresh - no dice.

Thank you sir!  It's pre-first-cup-of-coffee where I am.  LOL

    Hi James and Lisa,

It looks like Lisa's link is adding in a ) at the end, this link is the same, just without any symbols for Edge to yank into the address bar:

    community.dynamics.com/.../the-march-2021-hotfix-has-released-what-you-need-to-know

We are having some issues with updating the Doc site, but the blog site and download links provided there should still work.

    Thanks!

Thank you Lisa.  The link you provided doesn't seem to go anywhere for me.  And I don't see reference on the download page for the hotfix to which you're referring.  Or at least, the download page that I get to.  I can't tell anymore because MS has completely messed this up...  But I'll try to find that and give it a whirl.  Thanks!

    Hello All,

We will recommend anyone using the new MFA functionality goes to the February Hotfix, or gets to the mid-year update if they can wait until then. As a note, Mid Year should bring some more nice functionality for emailing (no specifics yet), so that would be where I would aim.

That said, for the Unknown error mentioned, we have seen a few causes:

    1. The one you ran into with the Multitenant setting.

We may be updating the document to specify using the Multitenant option, but are still doing some testing on our end. I usually run a Fiddler trace of the failed login, and there is an error that basically says Multitenant is required. We will update the documentation once we confirm some of the other items on our end.

    2. A third-party MFA is being used.

Outside MFA (like DUO) can sometimes be used, but some of them simply do not work based on some setup on the MFA side of things. If you are having issues with an outside MFA, try the default AAD/EXO MFA and see how that works.

    3. The user you are setting up MFA with does not have MFA set as "ENFORCED".

Depending on environment, we have had to set some "Setup" users as ENFORCED in the old MFA setup in Azure AD. The usual Conditional Access/Security Defaults can be used for everyone else, but the user setting the APP ID in GP should have the ENFORCED option selected.

I am glad you were able to figure this out on your own, and hopefully having these other common issues here will help others.

As a note, the Email Troubleshooting Guide will get updated with all of this once the Year-end rush is done

    Have a great week!

Thank you for the information.  I too have struggled with MFA setup.  One important item (if e-mailing remittance) is the February hotfix (community.dynamics.com/.../the-march-2021-hotfix-has-released-what-you-need-to-know) this is going to require getting from 18.3.1233 to 18.3.1245.

Well, for anyone paying attention who might come across this in the future...  After much cajoling, and convincing my IT guy to look into some logs, I discovered that the problem was in the configuration of the app registration.  Specifically, if you're having problems, check to see if the authentication supported account types is "multitenant".  In my case here, the client is on Azure AD and has a hosted AD as well.  I don't quite understand why (I'm not an AD guy) but the system pretty much REQUIRED me to list as multi-tenant.

Thanks to everyone who checked on this, though!
