Removing an address on Contact Person form

(0) ShareShare

Hello,

We go the Customer, then click create a new Contact Person and automatically the primary address of the customer is now the primary address of the contact.  That is good in most cases.  However, if the user needs to update the address to something else, if they 'edit' it or 'remove' it, it will automatically do the same 'edit' and 'remove' from the Customer card.  How can we prevent this.  I currently just have the permission disabled so they cant see the edit button on the main contact person form, however they can edit or remove if they go to advanced view.  I appreciate it.

Thanks!

    Hi CvanDy23,

The location of the customer is automatically also the location of the contact person of that customer. If you need additional addresses, you have to create a new one for that contact and ignore the default address of the customer.

    Hello,

Yes, I am aware of that :)  That is my problem.  When a contact person has this same customer address (happens by default), then if they edit this address or remove it, it will also remove or edit it from the customer address.  We do not want this to occur and we are trying to find a solution.  The contact may not always have the same address as the customer primary address.  Thanks!

    Hi cvandy23,

I think a customization would be required to have a warning or restriction on editing this primary address.

Maybe your process of creating the customer is wrong then. How about creating the primary address of the customer first, then add the contact person details separately? This way if you need to alter the contact person address details, it will not impact whatever is defined on the customer level.

You could also write a job to go through the customers and check the primary addresses, if it is the same location as on the primary contact, and then create a new address/set as primary if that is the case.

Thank you for the response, but you are incorrect Vilmos, the process of creating a customer or contact is actually correct.

We start at the customer form, then we add a new contact (from the customer form) and it automatically adds the default customer address to the contact.  This is by default.  The reason for going to the customer first is because the relationship with the Contact and the Customer is automatically related and the user does not have to search for the customer name under "Contact For" on the Contact form.  This is a time saver for the sales staff.  Most of the time the default address for the customer is what the contact would use as well.  However, if the user needs to change this default address, they can actually edit it or remove it and it will edit or remove from the customer as well.  We are looking to prevent that.  It seems like a bug.

Also, the job would not work for preventing this situation.  Security has helped some, but we are running into some issues with being able to prevent editing of the advanced address area.  Thanks

After reading through your original request and the additional information I can now understand it better.

You could try to capture the logic where the contact person address is being initialized from the original location, and instead of hooking it up to the same DirPartyLocation, try inserting a new one to make it independent.

Thank you, that is a good idea.  However it won't help with the existing ones.  When a new address is created on the contact, it does make it separate from the customer address, it's just the initial one that is the problem.  Thanks!
