Item Engineering data-Low level codes

We are having an issue with I believe low level codes,  we have FG items that we build and sell (low level code of zero), and they work ok in MRP.  On another FG item that we build and sell (but sometimes is a sub assembly of another FG item) the low leve codes do not seem to generate correctly, and we get negative balances in MRP in the future.  Looking into it deeper the FG item that is also a subassembly, will have a low level code of 2, and its components will also have a low level code of 2...

Anyone else seen this happen?

Doug

Low level codes should maintain themselves.  However, there is a utility that will regenerate the low level codes.  It is in Manufacturing->Utilities and is called MRP Low Level Codes.

A finished good that is NEVER used as a component of another item will have a LLC of 0.  A FG that is used one level down will have a LLC of 1 and it's components a LLC of 2.  The LLC is supposed to be the LOWEST level in the BOM trees where the item is found.

BTW...we cover LLCs in our Product Engineering book for GP Manufacturing.  Might check it out on our web site

Thanks Richard for the reply,  I do have a pretty good understanding of how the low level codes are supposed to work,  however I dont believe the utility that generates low level codes works correctlyl if the assembly, is also a component on another assembly.  I believe  the assembly does go to a LLC of 1, but he components below that do not update to 2.

Also I know for sure, that if you manually add the assembly to an existing picklist,  the LLC changes to a 1, but the components below that DO NOT uddate to a 2, and the utility does not update the components correctly.

Richard:  I have done more testing,  it looks like the LLC of the assembly, added to a picllist does update the LLC,  however if you add the assembly as a engineering BOM, and not a MFG BOM,  then the LLC updates on the assembly, but not the components of the assembly.  You end up with a LLC on the assembly, and copmonents of both 2.

to add to the comment above,  When Adding to the picklist, the LLC codes do change (engineering BOM's update finished goods item,  but not the components)

LLC is updated for both FG item, and ocmponents when adding to a picklist.

However,  if you run the utility, the LLC's are all put back to original.  SHould the LLC be updated when an item is added to a picklist?
