Setting AX to do simple ABC cycle count

Hi All,

I am trying to figure out what is the right way to set up simple ABC cycle count in AX 2012 R3 (without using the "advanced warehouse" functionality.

What I expect:
items are assigned to one of 4 groups: A (every 30 days), B (every quarter), C (every year), and X (do not count)
every work day AX can automatically list for me the items that need to be counted on that day, based on their group.

For example: if I have 120 items in group A, the first day AX will suggest me to count the first 4 (let's say items A1, A2, A3, A4).

The second day, AX will recognize I counted the above, do on the second day it will suggest I count A5, A6, A7, A8.

So forth, until over 30 days I would have covered all 120 items in group A (30 x 4).

and the same goes for items in group B and C.

So my expectation is for some automation that would suggest me each day the "next" items to count in each group.

here is what I tried, based on the online manuals:

1. I created 4 count groups (inventory management > Setup > Inventory > Count Groups), A, B, C and X
For group A  "Period" "30"
For group B  "Period" "90"
For C "Period" "365" (count once a year)
For X "Manual" (exclude from cycle count)

2. I assigned each inventory item to one of these groups.

3. I create a "count" journal, and I am trying to automatically populate all the products that need counting today.
Selecting the button Create > Item option: select group "A"

Now, unless I select value in "Max Number of Lines", AX populate ALL the items in group A, not just the ones that need to counted "today"

Ok, I limit the number of lines and get just the first few items in the group - I count them and post the count.

the following day I repeat the same process. I expect AX to no longer suggest the items I counted the previous day, since they were covered by the cycle.

However - AX still suggests the same items I counted the previous day.

What am I doing wrong?

Any good resource to show how it's done and what's the best practice for setting up cycle count?

Have you defined warehouse items? Product information management > Common > Released products.  Click on the manage inventory tab.  In the warehouse group, click Warehouse items.   Setup a warehouse item by associating it with a specific warehouse, counting group, and location.

    Have you activated Counting codes?

"When you create an on-hand or expired batch counting journal, and you select the Activate counting code option, any items that are associated with counting groups that use the Manual counting code will not be selected." https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa586380.aspx

Lachan has some vimeos on the topic see e.g.

     https://organicax.com/2016/09/18/counting-group-counting-code-manual/ Period https://organicax.com/2016/09/18/counting-group-counting-code-period/ Zero in stock https://organicax.com/2016/09/17/counting-group-counting-code-zero-in-stock/

Try the Counting code = 'Period' on the Counting group  Ito define how often the items in each Counting group should be counted (in combination with the 'Activate counting code' tick box). Define it as 30, 90 or 360 days for each monthly, quarterly or annual split. Create  the counting journal by counting group.

thanks magic1949, you have definitely sent me in the right direction.

    1. There were already "default" lines on the Warehouse items form. I added warehouse specific lines, but have not noticed any impact on the behaviour of cycle count.

    2. Instead of using the Create > Items option, I now use Create > On-Hand option together with selecting the "Activate Counting Code" - that definitely brings progress: now "manual" items do not get included, and "period" items only show up if they have not been counted within the current period.

My remaining issue is with having to execute the process by selecting the "Count Group"

If I do that, it means I have to select 3 different count journals every day - one for each Count Group (A, B, and C).

Is there not a way to create a single journal with all the counting necessary for the day?

I am a bit surprised, as this functionality has been around for ever. Do all companies doing ABC counting have to create 3 different journals every day?

I still wonder if anyone found a way to get a whole ABC cycle count started in a single count journal, and not one for each counting group?

Having to use multiple journals create many issues including easy way to track the total number of items getting counted every day,,,,
