Financial Dimension - External Code

Dear all,

Does anyone know what is the use of external code in financial dimension?

Currently we have requirement to have additional indicator in financial dimension for reporting purpose.

I thought that I could use this field for my additional field.

But I  just want to confirm first whether there is impact if I use this field.

Thanks in Advance,

M. H.

    Hi M. Hasan,

For AX2012 R3, there is also a cost accounting module available. This is however, so to say the 'old' cost accounting module. The functionalities are pretty much similar but the Setup is completely different as the cost accounting module was completely overhauled. You can find some information on this 'old version' in the training documents available from Partner/Customer source.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

    Hi Ludgiw,

Thanks a lot for your input.

Btw do you know whether the new function also available in AX 2012 R3?

Because when I look into the link, it is for AX 365.

    Thanks,

    M.H.

    Hi M.H.,

It is probably not the best practice to combine different information into a single financial dimension, such as B1001-B1099.

If you need to analyze the two codes (B1001 and B1099) later on separately, things will get complex. The same applies for changes that might be required so only one of those codes. For that reason, I would recommend that you double check whether you really want to go on with this kind of cost center number.

Regarding the fixed and variable cost separation, things might get a bit more complex because in the long run all costs are variable. It thus depends on the time range that you analyze whether costs can be considered as fixed or variable. From my perspective this is something that should be done in relation with the analysis that you run later on for your costs. Expressed differently, if you take some costs let's say for electricity of your office building that are based on a 3-year fix-price contract with your electricity provider, are those costs fixed or are they variable? If you analyze it over a time range of 1-2 years, the costs might be fixed but if you analyze it over a 4-years period, the costs might be variables. I guess you can find some better examples than I did but what I want to highlight is that you need to put much consideration into what are fixed and what are variable costs if you want to classify them through a financial dimension value. Also think about mixed costs that are let's say 70% fix and 30% variable.

What you can do in the current AX Version is making use of the cost accounting module that has been released just some weeks ago. This module has some built in functionalities for handling different versions of fixed and variable costs and it might be a better way to handle the fix-variable cost issue. Probably have a look at the following site for more Details. ax.help.dynamics.com/.../cost-accounting-home-page

Unfortunately, I do not have a clear answer to your questions but hopefully something to think about that helps you finding the best solution for your system.

    All the best,

    Ludwig

RE: Financial Dimension - External Code

    Hi Ludwig,

Currently we set up our financial dimension using the naming convention as intelligence numbering.

For example, the Cost Center with number B1001-B1099 is reserved for operational cost. Thus I could simply differentiate between corporate and operational cost using this code.

Beside this purpose, user also require to differentiate between let say fixed and variable cost. Since I have use the FD numbering for other purpose, I need other fields to accommodate this requirement.

That's why I try to use the external code fields.

    Regards,

    M.H.

    Hi M. Hasan,

I am not sure whether I understood your requirement fully and would imagine that you can simply use another financial dimension for the additional indicator that you need for reporting purposes.

Probably you can provide some more information on the issue and request from your customer.

    Many thanks,

    Ludwig
