Scribe Console Says That Services Are Not Running When They Are

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello:

We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 box with an application on it called Scribe.  I have reached out to Scribe, for support, but have been told that this is a networking issue to troubleshoot.

No errors are showing in Event Viewer, and the Scribe app's logs show no errors either.

But, I get errors upon trying to open the Scribe Console app.  I have tried pasting the errors, below.  I hope that they pasted.

The majority of these errors state that the five Scribe services are not running, even though they are.

If these errors did not paste below, I'll just say that they mostly say "Communication link failure", "Error loading server", "Confirm Scribe Services are running at site", and "08S01".

In order to eliminate these errors, I have to manually stop and restart these five services.  Although that's simple enough, I should not have to do this just about every day.

And, the Scribe Console is queued to run data import jobs.  I have to keep these jobs paused, though.  If I don't keep the jobs paused, then restarting these five services will force jobs to run automatically and try to reimport previously imported data into GP.

Does anyone know why an app would say that services are not running, when those services indeed are running?

Thanks!  Much appreciated!

John

    Oh, and the phrase "The Following Commands Fixed this issue for me:" is a quote by someone from that second URL link that I pasted--not by me.  :)

    Hi Sean:

    Glad to know that we're not the only one, in any case.  :)

    One thing that one of our IT Team Members suggested is to disable the TCP Chimney Offload feature in Windows on the server.  I'm checking with Scribe Support, to see if Scribe requires this feature.

    If Scribe does not require it, we may try disabling it.  I don't know if it will work to fix this Scribe issue but, again, we may try it.

    Below is the information that IT found on this feature and on disabling it.  You're welcome to try it.  Again, though, I make no guarantees that this is the fix nor do I know whether disabling this actually causes any problems.  If you do try it and have success, please let me know.

    The Following Commands Fixed this issue for me:

    netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled

    netsh interface tcp set global chimney=disabled

    netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled

    You can confirm that they were disabled with the following command

    netsh int tcp show global

    RE: Scribe Console Says That Services Are Not Running When They Are

    We're using version 7.8.0 and this same problem has plagued us for some time and unfortunately, we were told the same thing by Scribe Support.   Our internal networking group did a deep check into firewall proxies and policies to make sure nothing would be causing this and they couldn't find anything.    Outside of the version difference, we have an AD service account we use to run the SCRIBE services on a separate application box from our SQL server, but even then we're still having this "phantom" running of services when they're not actually running.   We've not been able to figure this out so for this reason, among a couple of others, is why we're getting ready to migrate away from SCRIBE to SmartConnect.

    In addition to Adrian's questions, what version of SCRIBE are you running?

    Hi Adrian:

    Thanks!

    The following are the questions and my answers:

    Are you running the services under a dedicated svc_scribe style windows auth?

    No.  It's local system account.

    Are you connecting to the SQL database using Windows or SQL logins?

    SQL.

    Can you access the Scribe Internal database from Studio Manager using the SAME login that you use for the Console to connect?

    Yes.

    John.  These are quite often related to network permissions and how the server is setup.  Do the DTS jobs run manually ok?

    Can't really help with the error much without seeing it, did you call your Support Partner?

    As for manually restarting, you can run something like this on a schedule:

    @echo off

    sc query "Scribe MessageServer" | find "RUNNING"

    IF %errorlevel% == 0 (

       net stop "Scribe MessageServer"

    timeout 12

    net stop "Scribe EventManager" /y

    timeout 8

    echo Services stopped successfully. Starting services....

    ) ELSE (

    echo Services not running. Starting services...

    )

    net start "Scribe EventManager"

    timeout 8

    net start "Scribe MessageServer"

    timeout 8

    IF %errorlevel% == 2 (

    echo Could not start service.

    ) ELSE IF %errorlevel% == 0 (

    echo Service started successfully.

    ) ELSE (

    echo Starting failed. Errorlevel: %errorlevel%...

    )
