We have a client that is telling us every time they reboot their GP server the users need to change their passwords. There are no third party products here. Has anyone else experienced this?

Not in this case. Someone turned of the SQL startup scripts.

Thanks for the update, Richard.  I've never seen that either, so good to know.

    Have a great day.

Did someone change the server's name?

I believe I have found the solution to this issue. It took some doing but here are the steps. I hope this helps someone else.

    1. Stop/Start SQL service – the problem occurred. This eliminates the server as being the problem.
    2. I tried using another GP account but could not login as this account even after changing the password.
    3. I tried creating a new account called MOBY. This account could not login even after setting it as POWERUSER and giving it access to all companies.
    4. Just for the heck of it I ran the usual clear activity script. Oddly enough it told me the DEX_LOCK and DEX_SESSION tables in the tempdb database did not exist.
    5. After doing some research I discovered they are created by a script called smDEX_BUILD_LOCKS that runs when SQL is restarted.
    6. However, there is a setting in SQL called Scan for Startup Procs. Reviewing other GP/SQL instances this setting was set to True. On this server it was set to False.
    7. Having seen this I set it to True and Stop/Start the SQL services. As soon as I did that both accounts could login.

I have suggested they find who made this change and hang him/her from the highest yardarm!!! Actually just have this person pay for the time to undo their mistake.

That could be it as well. If they have the Enforce Password Policy setup on the user accounts, when the passwords expire, it won't automatically force the user out of Dynamics GP, as we don't want to interrupt any processing they're doing within the application, but the next time they would log out and back into GP, they'd be prompted to change their password.

The other thing I noticed about the password policies, is that if the policy is setup to require a password change every 30 days, for example, and they change the password at 8:30am on June 1st, exactly 30 days later at 8:30am, that password will expire.  Because of this, I've always recommended to change the user's password before or after business hours, if not 24/7.

    Thanks

Derek, we have users accounts set to expire. I wonder if they have something in their domain group policy that has them expiring and since they never exit GP they do not have to log back in until the server is rebooted. By that time their passwords have expired.

I haven't heard of anything like that, that we've seen or heard about.

Do they have something changing the passwords in SQL? That would cause the user to be prompted to change their password when they login to GP due to encryption.

Only other thing I can think of, is if the DSNs on the different machines that Dynamics GP is installed onto, are not the exact same setup, that can force users to change their password in order to be able to login, but then they wouldn't be able to login on another machine that has GP.

Other than that, I'd be curious what all is happening when the GP server is rebooted, that would impact GP and/or the user's passwords?

    Thanks
