is it possible to send a "Thank you" letter to a customer from the AX , does the "Sales & Marketing" module cover this ?

You can use Email templates to send emails to your customers. Refer technet.microsoft.com/.../aa834374.aspx
Depending on when you want the "Thank you" email to be sent, you have to configure a workflow or email receipts (retail)
