Hello everyone,

I am trying to restore a differential Back-up from a SQL Server Database to another Database on another SQL Server. But i keep getting this error message.

"System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The log or differential back-up cannot be restored because no files are ready to rollforward. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo).

Pls, i need your assistance. It is quite urgent

    Saheed,

You have to restore a full backup first with the NO RECOVERY mode and then restore the differential backup.  You could also restore any log backups if you have.  The sequence is important though.

    Thanks for your response,

Do i have to choose any Restore options when doing the FULL backup with the NO RECOVERY mode?, because i don't want to overwrite the data on the existing database. I just want to ADD the data that was backed up to the data of the other (Server) Database.

No, you can't restore a backup without losing data after the backup was taken.  Backups are a snapshot of the database at a specific point in time.  Restoring the DB simply restores the data to that point in time.  Here's a link with more details: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms175510.aspx

You can restore a full backup into a new database.  That way you're not overwriting the production DB.  Then you can restore the differential backup to that new database.  When you restore a database just give it a new "To database" name and then select the BAK file.  This will automatically create a new database and restore the file you select.

Keep in mind the differential backup is useless without a previously made full backup.  The differential backup simply stores all changes made since the last full backup.
