Security in 2012: Hiding menu items

(0) ShareShare

We are doing an implementation for a client who wishes their users to have severely restricted access to the system. Even some of the duties contained in the Dynamics AX 2012 security configuration grants too much access. How do I go about hiding these menu items? For example, some of the duties grant access to Setup menu items, which these users should not be able to see. Please note that I am not a developer.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You will most likely need to remove some of the privileges from the duties. Do you have the security development tool installed? If not, I would highly recommend getting that installed. It greatly simplifies the security modification process. It is still in beta but I haven't found any major issues with it. You can get the install from Information Source: informationsource.dynamics.com/.../Rfpservicesonline.aspx

    Hi Adele,

Thanks for the advice! I've installed the tool, but am still struggling to remove privileges from duties. i feel like I'm missing something simple - any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Salome,

Yes, this is a slight limitation to the security development tool that I have found. You are not actually able to remove the privilege from the duty while using the tool. Instead, you have to remove it through the AOT.

However, it is still fairly simple. All you need to do is find the menu item in the tree of the security tool, right click that menu item, and select Reference Privilege. This pops open a window which shows all of the privileges that are related to the selected menu item as well as what type of access each of those privileges provide. Then, you just need to go into the AOT and remove the applicable privilege from your duty.

    Hope this helps!

Ok, this is the last stupid question, I hope! Our install guy swears he installed and ran the tool, but I am unable to locate and use it. Where is it hiding?

It should be in System Administration > Setup > Security and it is called Security Entry Point Permissions (not the most intuitive name...)
