Migration from Version 8 of Great Plains

Posted on by 5

The company I work for is looking to upgrade from Great Plains version 8 to Dynamics 365 or QB. Does anyone know if we would even be able to carryover data to a newer software or is our version too old to be compatible? Any help/resources/tools would be greatly appreciated.

Why not just get up to date with Microsoft Dynamics GP.

There is no need to go to a new product and have to learn everything again.

Derek and Bill are spot on with this. One more complication with D365 is that is designed to be a cloud solution which includes subscription pricing. So not only is it a completely different application you also pay for it in a different way. If I were you I would use Bill's skills to upgrade to GP 18.2, which is the latest version of GP.

As Derek notes the simple answer to the way you ask the question is "not at this time" and more likely just a simple "no"

We currently have a client that is migrating from GP0218 to D365 and we have engaged a consulting partner that knows D365 specifically to assist with this work as the two products are very different from one another.

What you know in GP8 will move with you through the versions of Dynamics GP, all the way to GP2018,  Of course there will be differences, but from a user perspective what they learned in one version is very much the same in the next version.  There are new features, expanded features, but moving up does not require learning over again.

The same is not true of the move to D365.  That is a new / different tool and therefore requires new and different skills.

Again, D365 is not Dynamics GP, thus there is no 'upgrade' from GP 2018/18.2 to D365.

If you open a search engine and enter 'Dynamics GP vs Dynamics 365' you'll see a ton of information comparing the two.

I would also recommend the following:

If we are looking at Dynamics 365, would we just add one more step to the upgrade path (GP 2018/18.2 > D365)?h

RE: Migration from Version 8 of Great Plains

As has been mentioned, to upgrade Great Plains 8.0 to a newer version of Dynamics GP, you're looking at something like:

          v8.0 > GP 10.0 > GP 2013 > GP 2016 > GP 2018/18.2

This doesn't take into account the SQL versions to be used for this potential 4 step upgrade path, and that is also with the assumption the Great Plains 8.0 is on MS SQL Server, which usually it is.

In newer versions of Dynamics GP, there is a migration functionality to go to D365, but D365 is not Dynamics GP, it's more Dynamics NAV and Dynamics CRM than GP.

We don't have any migration functionality to go from Dynamics GP to QuickBooks.

Let us know if you have any questions.

    Thanks

Is this P.SQL or MS SQL? There is no direct upgrade path either one. Please remember that D365 is not GP but a completely different application. Any possibility of upgrading to GP 18.2 instead?

RE: Migration from Version 8 of Great Plains

First of all the process you are going to undertake is complex due to the number of steps and required patches that will have to happen along the way.  Is it possible ?  Yes.  Is it easy - NO

We have been successful in migrating a number of clients over the years through the various versions of GP but have never been asked to migrate from GP to QuickBooks.  Migration to either Dynamics 365 or Quickbooks seems to be a very polar opposite solution.

We would strongly recommend a good working relationship with a consultant that has the experience and ability to bring this migration to a conclusion in the Microsoft GP family first, then engage in the conversation about migration to the next step.

Question, do you know if you have all the keys and software licenses for the necessary steps from GP8 to current version, or is this part of the discussion of moving to D365 or QB - the fact that you are not current on the GP8 Annual Maintenance with Microsoft.

We have been successful in the past with clients in this situation, maybe best to send me a private email (billc@misltd.ca) and we can discuss off line.
