Assembly BOMs -- Invoicing for Partial Shipments

Hi:

I'm trying to review how partial shipments and invoicing for Assembly Bills of Material (BOMs) are handled in Business Central, especially for orders released in stages.

The Assembly Policy is "Assemble to Stock".

What is the process for invoicing partial shipments of Assembly BOMs, such as billing for half of a BOM when only part of an order is shipped?

How does this impact billing and order management in BC?

Thanks!

John

    Hello,

In Business Central, when using the "Assemble to Stock" policy for Assembly BOMs, partial shipments and invoicing are handled similarly to standard inventory items. The assembly is pre-built and stocked before the sales order is fulfilled. If only part of the order is shipped (e.g., half of the BOM quantity), BC allows you to post a partial shipment, and then invoice only the shipped quantity.

The system tracks shipped vs. invoiced quantities, so billing reflects actual delivery.

This ensures accurate revenue recognition and inventory management. However, careful coordination is needed to ensure assembly orders are completed and available in stock before partial shipments are posted, especially when fulfilling staged or split orders.

Hi, In Assembly Order, the account that consumes items is Inventory Adjmt. You can test the cost of each stage according to your settings.

Item Ledger Entry Type Value Entry Type Variance Type Expected Cost Account Balancing Account
Assembly Consumption Direct Cost   No Inventory Inventory Adjmt.
Assembly Output Direct Cost   No Inventory Inventory Adjmt.

    Hello,

For “Assemble to Stock” BOMs, partial shipments and invoices work like standard item sales:
Each assembly order produces finished goods that go into stock.
When only part of the order ships, you can post a partial shipment; the system only invoices the shipped quantity.
The remaining quantity stays open for later shipment and invoicing.
So billing aligns strictly with shipped quantities — no special handling for partial BOMs.

    Hi,

For Assemble to Stock, partial shipments and invoicing work like standard sales orders:
    > Ship the quantity you have available from stock. Business Central allows partial shipment.
    > When posting, select Ship or Ship and Invoice for the shipped quantity. The invoice will reflect only what was shipped.
    > The remaining quantity stays open on the sales order until the next shipment.
    > Assembly posting does not affect invoicing directly; invoicing is based on shipped quantity, not the full BOM.
    Impact:
    > Revenue and COGS are recognized only for shipped items.
    > The order remains partially open until all quantities are shipped and invoiced.

    Regards
    Rishabh
