AX 2012 License Partner Change

Posted on by 30

Hello everyone!

I'm currently dealing with a bit of administrational issue and after having gone back and forth with support e-mails I thought I had better ask here since we're stuck and I cannot find the information I require.

The situation is as follows: we're a relatively small partner and are starting to get our own projects underway after having worked with other bigger Microsoft partners for a while, so this is a first now. A long-time customer of ours wants to change to us as their license partner for their AX2012 system, which we implemented by ourselves. Back when the project took place we asked for that other partner solely for the licenses.

While talking to the MBS Customer Care Operations, we handed in a Partner Change request and got the answer that we are missing the SPA contract, and you have to be a Dynamics Partner and SPA holder for a partner change to take place. However, we were also told that the SPA is no longer available and we can join the CSP program, but that would still not make us eligible to become a Microsoft Dynamics on-premises partner to run this partner change request.

Now my question is: is there any way to have this partner change get through, or are we locked into the situation that we will never actually be able to take over these licenses as the licensing partner since we're simply too late and no new Dynamics on-premises partner status will ever be available again?

Thank you in advance for any help!

Kind regards

Jan Friedrichs

RE: AX 2012 License Partner Change

    Hello Andre,

I have now heard back from MS Germany who said it is not possible to get an SPA contract anymore. The EOC (European Operations Center) has stopped these and there is no way to obtain an SPA anymore. Thus, it seems to not be possible to sell on-premises AX 2012 licenses unless you have an SPA contract from times where it was still available. The responsibility of this lies with the Microsoft EOC, not the local subsidiary. However, we will not be contacting the EOC as we now know we will get the same answer there.

Summarily, there will be no more new license partners for old on-premises AX systems (pre-DFO). If you want to run such a project and do not have a SPA contract or are an official Dynamics on-premises partner, then you will have to find a Microsoft partner that does have this SPA for the sourcing of licenses to run the system. If you wish to become partner of record for AX 2012 and/or previous systems and do not have a SPA contract, you are too late.

I suppose this is part of phasing out older Dynamics systems and pushing partners and customers alike towards cloud solutions. I just wish there was more transparent information on the subject.

Once again thank you for your time Andre, perhaps this information will be useful to you, too.

    Kind regards

    Hi Jan,

I can feel your frustration about this. Unfortunately, on this forum, we can't help you as it is monitored and answered by volunteers; mostly working in the field and not at Microsoft. I do hope you get the correct help from Microsoft Support soon.

Thank you for your reply, Andre.

We do not have a Partner Account Manager right now or yet. For the most part, we have been supporting projects and the ones we ran by ourselves we had larger partners taking over the licensing. I suppose we will get one as a result of this process now, should we succeed in our endeavor.

It has been a bit of an odyssey, we were told to contact our local Microsoft office, which I phoned and was then forwarded to "the right people" - which turned out to be a recorded message telling us to raise a ticket in the partner portal. That ticket is in processing now. I hope we get a solution there. Just: with the right information we could have skipped a few steps.

    Hi Jan,

I would suggest to contact your local Microsoft office with this question. Do you have a Partner Account Manager?
