Dynamics GP, Unknown Dictionary Error

In Dynamics GP, the users will  get an 'Unknown Dictionary Error that appears intermittently. They may have been working all morning long with no issues, then receive the error.

From what I can tell, users may receive the error at the same time, but it not uncommon for all to begin receiving the error over an extended time frame beginning in the early afternoon.

What could possibly cause these errors to appear intermittently, on a near daily basis.

As Blll suggested this sounds like a connectivity issue. Are these individual workstations or connecting via terminal server? GP is an excellent network stress tester. I would start by looking for any network disconnect issues.

For the ‘Unknown Dictionary Error’, normally, this type of message is due to paths in the Dynamics.set file being incorrect and/or the GP application not being able to read that path or the dictionary file itself.

As a test, move the forms/reports dictionary files local to the Dynamics GP directory that is seeing this error, not using a shared network drive for those dictionary files, if not already local.

I’ve also seen where rebooting the machine that Dynamics GP is installed onto has also resolved this type of error, so it can be caused by a number of things, but ultimately Dynamics GP cannot find the dictionary it is looking for, via the path the Dynamics.set file is showing the dictionary to exist.

    Thanks

Mike, how are the users connected to the GP Server?

Are you on a single office connection?  Are you running from home over VPN?

There are number of reasons - outside of the server - that could cause issues.

One other thing that pops to mind is process on the SQL Server?  Are there any processes happening on a schedule?  Backups / Updates - I dont have an exhastive list, but just thinking out here.

    Hope this might help.
