Electronic Reporting and Print Management Settings

ReportReport
Posted on by 14

I've come across various statements online that mention how electronic-reports are only compatible with "print-management enabled" reports.

Can anyone shed some more light on what this means exactly? Perhaps it means that the OOTB configurations (released through LCS) are currently only for reports that are "print-management enabled"?

I've come across examples online that demonstrate how to launch an "ad-hoc" electronic report through a menu item. These types of reports exist in D365 already too. And thus, in contrast to the "print management" statement above.

In theory, can any SSRS report be setup as an electronic report (as long as the data model, data mapping, and format are properly setup)?

I have the same question (0)

    Hi partner,

Which D365 app are you using?

Can you elaborate a bit on your question?

I'm basically wondering if someone can confirm the following assumptions:

    • For every OOTB "print-management enabled" SSRS report, there also exists an OOTB electronic reporting (ER) configuration
    • Currently, all existing OOTB ER reports from LCS Global Repository are only for "print-management enabled" reports
    • Any ER report can be executed from a menu-item (of course this requires x++ development to achieve .. but there is an already existing interface to make this happen)

I notice my question has been moved to a new thread.

Just a bump as an introduction.

    Hello dax dev,

The ER are also working without making use of print management.

You can basically design your report, run it and get the result recorded as a local file. Alternatively, you can directly put it on SharePoint, etc.

The only thing that is currently not available is a menu item that allows you selecting your custom report and including it into the menu structure. This needs a modification.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

Thanks, Ludwig. Much appreciated. I have a couple follow-up questions, to confirm my understanding.

    - "You can basically design your report, run it and get the result recorded as a local file"

You mean to run that kind of report from the electronic-reporting workspace (reporting configurations) itself?
Otherwise, I expect it will require a custom menu item.

"The ER are also working without making use of print management."

My understanding is that yes, you can indeed make them work without it.

But it would require, in almost all cases, to develop these kinds of reports from scratch.
And customization code to execute it from a menu item.

The reason for this, is because the OOTB GER configurations are all for "print-management enabled" reports (with few exceptions, for example cheques, which are integrated with the method-of-payment parameters form). Thus, you cannot make use of the derived configurations (there is no OOTB support for non-print management enabled reports).

    Hi dax dev,

Yes, you can run the reports directly from the ER workspace without having the need for a new menu item.

And yes, most of the time, you have to develop the reports from scratch but that is not that difficult and don't forget that Microsoft ships a lot of standard reports that you can copy and modify as needed.

If you need some additional insights into this, have a look at this site.

I posted a lot of examples how ER can be used.

Thanks again, Ludwig. I'll review the examples you've posted.

Is it correct that the majority of these electronic reports from Microsoft are for "print-management enabled" reports only?

    Hi dax dev,

Most of the ER are related to payments and outgoing reports. The outgoing reports basically replace the old SSRS reports that you use e.g. for invoices, etc.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

    @Ludwig Reinhard @dax_dev
    Hi
I wanted to check if there is a new update from Microsoft after these many years to support custom ER to be setup in Print management or it can only be run from a Menu Item?

If it requires custom menu item to be created , can you please guide me the steps for development as I am new to d365 FO.

Any sort of guidance is greatly appreciated.
