client software loaded on a workgroup PC

Posted on by 55

I would like to run the Dynamics SL 2018 client from a PC that is on a network with the Dynamics and SQL server, but not joined to the domain.  I have a domain user ID, but do not log onto this workgroup PC with it.  I have a mapped drive on this PC to the shared SL directory on the server and I have entered my domain credentials to connect to the share.  I have successfully installed the Dynamics client, and done the initial setup to select the SQL server name and the Dynamics system database.  All of this works.  But when I reach the final step of logon, this PC fails to complete the logon, with a message indicating my user name has failed to authenticate.  Since I did not log into this PC with my domain credentials, where is the Dynamics client trying to get authentication credentials from, and how can I get logged into Dynamics as a valid user on the "workstation" PC?  Thanks.

    Dear Tom,

its a system wide /entire company setting for SL. To make changes to the authentication method that SL uses to log in you need to run the Microsoft dynamics SL Database Maintenance utility in Windows Administrative tools. .  In the utility Its found Under the Update Database tab, where there is a button called Set Authentication Type.. Select sql and I believe it will ask you to set the sysadmin password.

Back in SL you will have to remove the windows authentication mapped to the user (User Maintenance) and type the password for sql auth into the password box.

Thanks Jana.  Can I set up a single user for SQL authentication, or must I switch the entire company?  Can you point me to where this change is made?

    Dear Tom,

I would assume its trying the use the windows users credentials to log in, as they would be setup as a user with their windows credentials within SL on the user setup screen.

You can try setting up the Password in the Password box of the user maintenance screen, see if it prompts them for a sign in .

But I think this scenario requires using the sql authentication rather than windows authentication.
