How to associate project created from microsoft project(project.microsoft.com) site to project operations.

Posted on by 85

Hi Team,

I am trying to understand the relationship between project operations and project for web(project.microsoft.com), the projects created in project operations are getting visible in project.microsoft.com site but the project created in project.microsoft.com are not getting visible in Project Operations. Can someone make me understand this functionality.

How can I create WBS structure(project tasks) in project.microsoft.com site and associate  with project operations?

How can i import WBS into the Project Operations system?

 Thanks.

Well... that's a good question and the answer is more based on my personal opinion, which is that organization wide productivity and business applications should not reside in the default environment.

Sandbox and prod environments also enable ALM and customization best and proven practices.

In a nutshell I approach different use cases as follows:

    - Default env. Customer uses P4W as it is and primarily through the ModProj UI. They have no desire or plans to extend the product. Many times a scenario in internal PoCs for the tool.

    - Sandbox dev, sandbox test, prod. Customer extends the product, uses the Project Accelerator, leverages the P4W model-driven app, has committed to the product.

    Hi Antti Pajunen,

    Thanks for the response.

After searching microsoft docs, i have come accross the below link.

    docs.microsoft.com/.../deploying-project.

In which it says , we can deploy the project created in Project for the web to non-default environment but i couldn't able to understand it completely.

Why i need to create different instances of project for the web.

    Thanks.

There's no simple way to import a WBS before the import .mpp feature rolls out to Project Operations. You can use the schedule APIs to programmatically create a WBS. Theoretically you can import a WBS from tools like Jira to ProjOps but it's precision work and pretty much needs to be done in code.

One option is to create project templates yourself. Daniel Bach has written a really good post about it:

    Hi Antti Pajunen,

    Thanks for your response.

Is there any other place related to project software, we can create WBS and can be linked to Project Operations at the moment?

We have the WBS export functionality in Project Operations, in the similar way why i couldn't able to import WBS even through project task template?

    Thanks.

    Hi Humble11Guy.

Projects created from Project Home i.e. project.mocrosoft.com are always created in the Default environment in vanilla Project for the web. Project Home also displays projects created in Project Operations and in sandbox/product Dataverse environments with vanilla Project for the web. It's not possible to create a Project Operations project from Project Home at the moment.

Importing a WBS to Project Operations is also not possible at the moment. When the import .mpp functionality becomes available in ProjOps, you'll be able to import project plans created in Microsoft Project (desktop client).
