Batch Numbers of BOM Lines

Hi,

I've just created a Work Order for a batch of 20 items. Each of these 20 items has the same BOM - so this work order effectively drives 20 identical BOMs. When I try to start the work order it tells me I need to specify batch numbers for 2 of the 3 items on the BOM.

I can specify batch numbers by clicking 'BOM' on the production details section of the action pane. However, I can't split the lines for the items. If I want to pick 10 items from one batch and 10 from another how would I do this?

Running AX 2012 R2.

You should do that when picking the raw materials for the order. (you can do that from the BOM form directly by clicking Update\Pick or whatever)

That's when you'll be able to split them as you like, picking from different batches

    Hi Ivan,

I'm not sure if I'm looking at this from the wrong place - picking is the first operation on the job. I can't start the job until I provide a batch number on the batch controlled items.

I've tried creating a discrete picking list, as opposed to one driven by keying to the picking operation - and it tells me I can't do this whilst the status of the works order is 'Released'.

    Hi Will,

Presumably, on the General tab of the 'Start' form, you've got 'Automatic BOM Consumption' and 'Post picking list now' set such that AX is attempting to post a picking list journal when the works order is started?

As Guy says, you cannot automatically post the picking list, so on the first operation when they define the pick they need to create the details in the picking list journal (where you can split the lines). This is now a manual step to allow you to define the batches. However if all of the stock exists at the point you create the pick journal at the start and you have reservation turned on it should reserve the batches and still allow automatic consumption. This defeats the point of batch control for me as the user will post a batch they are unaware of and use another so traceability is pointless, but it will do it if you have the stock.

Thanks again Guy - I found the auto-checked post picking list option just before I checked my emails! It does seem an odd thing to have checked - I would imagine that the majority of people would be defining batches at the point of picking, rather than beforehand. I could be wrong on that.

It's all about when you want to post consumption of the raw materials, I guess. And, of course, not everyone who does AX production uses Batch!

    Very true.

Out of interest (and don't worry - I can probably look this up!) was Dynamics originally developed as a financial product, as opposed to an integrated ERP? It just seems to me that purchasing/invoicing/accounting procedures are far more intuitive.

    Thanks again for the help.

    Sorry, I'm not that old!

From what I know Axapta 1.0 had a production module, and before Axapta there might have been a product called Concorde.

These may help with the history!

In terms of being intuitive, I can understand why your production operators might struggle with route cards, picking list journals and the like. Which I guess is one reason why, if you were doing simple kit-type production for example, you could get AX to post them automatically!
