Semi-Automatic Lot Number Linking Between Components and Finished Goods

Hello:

This GP 10.0 Manufacturing client and I have been testing the linking of lot-numbered components and lot-numbered finished goods. This is the process that is "created" in GP, upon checking the box for "Manually select serial/lot numbers in Quick MO".

There is one issue that they have with this process.

They want the finished good to have the same lot number as the component. I did ask them if they are sure that their finished goods will only have one component containing a lot number. They are going to get back to me on that one.

But, let's say that they do have just the one component having a lot number per finished good. Microsoft says that there is not a way to have that lot number automatically tie to the finished good.  Is there anyone out there who has created a tool that would do this?

You see, the Manufacturing Lot Number Entry window for the finished good window automatically opens after the window for pulling the component and its lot number. They don't want to have to remember the component's lot number for the finished good in the Manufacturing Lot Number Entry window.

Thanks!

John

One resolution may be to set all the items on the BOM to backflush and use the MO Entry window and the MO Receipt entry windows to post MO's.   On the MO entry, you can assign a lot up front.   Then the linking can be done.   Do you also have the 'Require Linking Lot/Serials' turned on?

    Hi Dan:

Actually, the items have always been set to backflush.  Also, I forgot to mention that the client uses Quick Manufacturing Orders and not "full-blown" Manufacturing Order Entry.

Yes, "Require Serial/Lot Linking" is turned on.

So, there's no way of doing this for Quick Manufacturing Orders?

BOM Will fix this.  And then add the Assembly ( finished good with components) to inventory as an "Assembleage".  As long as lot tracking is turned on in "Item Mantenance" for the components that need it, Assembly Entry will have the lots for the components ready to pick.  With BOM you can also add components that don't have lot tracking.

Here is something to ask your client.  If the Assembly Lot has specific components which have specific lots, what happens if the client's inventory for a specific component has multiple lots at any one time? Assembly auto fills the component lots, but in order to correctly pull inventory, the correct lot for that component must be manually selected.
