I have an odd issue - client is on GP2016 and using Office 365 but when they export to excel it opens in xls not xlsx - not sure if thqt is what is causing GP to crash when he exports about 100,000 rows - if he does 50,000 it works fine but as I said it opens with xls - confused about that

If you have a SmartList report that will return 50,000 to 100,000 records without an error or crashing GP, you're doing good, as usually we see issues when we get as many as 5000 to 10,000 records or more with SmartList, as it isn't actually designed for a large volume of records returned, more of a quick query view. We usually recommend using Excel Reports and/or SSRS reports for larger volume of data.

That being said, even with the enhanced switch, mine appear to be using XLSX, but again, I don't know if the file extension is what would cause GP to crash, more that it is an issue that SmartList really isn't designed to return 100,000 records. I'm surprised you're able to export 50,000 without any issues, to be honest.

    Thanks

Why not use an Excel List instead of a Smartlist?

Thanks Greg - I am trying to get the client to possibly switch to SSRS Reports

We see this pretty regularly with large data sets and SmartList. As Derek said, it's really not designed or meant for that.

Not only does it sometimes not work at all, but even f it works, it takes forever. We've see situation where switching to Excel refreshable reports cuts the time from an hour to under a minute. That is not an exaggeration.
