Errors with SSRS development/deployment when running Visual Studio on a Remote Desktop Server

Posted on by

Hi, I have inherited a few Remote Desktop Servers which we have added some AX client shortcuts on for specific Client Configurations. This has been a good first step to centralising access to our environments rather than having numerous configuration files stored here and there.

However the next step is to get Report development/deployment working and I want to again publish some Visual Studio shortcuts to the Public Desktop for users to access.

For background we are running AX 2012 R2 CU7 and using Visual Studio 2010 SP1 on Windows Server 2012 R2.

Now when I change the target property for the Visual Studio icons the Application Explorer correctly points to the metadata set by the configuration file listed in the target field.

Unfortunately as I understand it when deploying, rebuilding or refreshing within Visual Studio, the application looks only at the active client configuration on the server, which is a constraint but something I could document.

My problem is I can't get this far, I get one error message on one RDS and another on the second RDS. On the first server when I attempt to refresh a dataset or build the solution I get the following:

Error 2 The "GenerateRdlTask" task failed unexpectedly.

Does anyone have any ideas of how I may solve these?

I am considering separating the two development environments across the two RDS' so I only have one AX and VS shortcut per server.

Thanks in advance.

    Hi Chris Ironmonger,

You can specify AX config in VS shorcut as per documentation docs.microsoft.com/.../how-to-open-visual-studio-with-a-specific-configuration

But personally I prefer to open VS from AOT (editing one of existing reports) and it should pick up correct configuration.
