Continuous Number Sequence

Can someone point me to some documentation on when to use the continuous feature in number sequences. When going through our implementation our VAR steered us towards using continuous on most all number sequences we set up as it seemed to solve some of the issues we came across during testing. However, I came across a few different blog postings saying it is not wise to use them unless absolutely necessary Now it seems I am seeing other errors occur because we have continuous on. Not sure if i can turn continuous off.

Thank you

Dan

    Re: Continuous Number Sequence

I am not as clever as others but i could try to answer.

Number sequences are the way AX generates numbers given to transactions.  In my experience, these seem to be very customizable in AX 2012.  You can find them under the Organization administration - Common - number sequences - number sequences.

What you would need to do is find the one that is set up to generate numbers for your "items".  You can then define how the number will be generated, including a starting number.

Below is a link to a good MS article I read to learn about number sequences:

    msdn.microsoft.com/.../hh242127.aspx

    Hope that helps!

    Re: Continuous Number Sequence

    Hi All,

    you seem clever.

so i have a (stupid) question

when you are speaking about number sequences you mean like --> 501, 502, 503, 504 and so on or?

because i need to make such one,

story to be told: i have a new item i want to have in my system, normally i handling electronic stuff but this item im speaking about is a shirt (cloth)

and my intention is that i want to start this and all the other shirts from a number which not mess around in the normally electronics parts.

so my point is, can i somehow make a new Part number seria startin from 40000?

    Re: Continuous Number Sequence

We also came to the conclusion that using continuous was not a good idea unless the particular num sequence required it. We turned off continous for PR number during implementation testing, and it didn't cause any problems. Just be sure first that your Next number is where you want it to be.

Hi Dan, look at this Technet article - it explains (in its bottom part) that continuous number sequences are not recommended by performance reasons.
