I have one custom entity in CRM. My requirement is to create a lookup field(say Customer) for this entity like Out of the Box Customer in Case entity which is pointing to both Account and Contact records. I want to show details of this custom entity in the customer details section of case form. How can I create this custom Customer field?
Hi Divya,
As mentioned above, Customer Lookup is available OOB to only refer to Account and Contact. You can refer to below articles to create a custom multi entity search lookup. I found them online, they are on 2011 environment though but might be helpful:
Hi,
Thanks for your response.
But I want to create customer field which will select my custom entity & account.
Hello Divya;
You can create custom field and please select Customer Data Type.
After that you can create quick view form. If you want to customer details on form, you can add to quick view form in custom entity's main form.
For Example ;
Hi,
Create a custom field with Customer type, it will resolve your issue.
Hi Divya,
In regards to your query, you will create customer type field in custom entity.
- A custom customer type of field can be created in the similar manner as of other fields just go to Settings -> Customizations in the CRM then select an entity for which you want to create a custom field. While setting the data type for the field you can find the Customer data type, set type as customer & save it.
- While creating a customer type of field you will see a relationship being created for Account as well as Contact entity.
- Thus by placing the customer type field on any of the entity form, one can make full use of the customer type field as per convenience.
I hope it helps,
Thanks.

Hi, since your custom entity is related to customer and you want to show the details of the custom entity on the case form, so create a quick view form on custom entity and add this on the case form.
Hope this resolve your problem
Hi Divya,
As others have pointed you can create a field of type customer and add it to the form.
Maybe, you can explore the PCF. Here are few links for reference.

Hi Harish,
I'm hoping you can answer a related question for me. I've added a Customer field into a solution in our dev sandbox but I'm getting error messages saying that some of the required components related to this new field are missing. Some were entity relationships that I've found, some were fields that I just can't find (both ending "...idtype"). Any idea where I can find these fields?
I'm surprised they haven't added to the solution automatically (especially the relationships) as I created the field inside the solution.
Cheers,
Dirk
Hi Divya,
Customer datatype adds two relationships to the lookup attribute, one for the Account entity and the other to the Contact entity. You will not be able to add relationship to any other entity except for Account and Contact entities for a Customer lookup attribute. This is not allowed for a custom entity.
Best Regards,
Harish M

Thanks for your response.
But I want to create customer field which will select my custom entity & account.
Hi Divya,
Customer field is another type of a field.
It will select Account and Contact both for the selection.
Thanks
