Best data migration strategy. CRM Dynamics 2011 to 365 v9.1 (On premise)

Posted on by 20
Hello everyone.

We are currently planning the migration process from Dynacmis CRM 2011 to the CRM 365 9.1 (on premise) version. But we are not sure what is the best strategy for DB migration.

We know that we will have to do the update step by step importing the organization from 2011, through 2013, 2015, 2016 to 2019.
But we don't know what is the best data synchronization strategy from the current production environment to the new environment.

The DB currently its size is 90GB

I appreciate your recommendations, suggestions or advice.

I would look at this from the point of view of what would be the supported path from CRM perspective then align with the SQL side of things with that in mind:

The quickest supported path from CRM 2011 is:

CRM 2011 with the latest update

CRM 2013 SP 1 or higher

CRM 2015 >> Apply the latest update

CRM 2016 (8.0) >> Upgrade to 8.2 December Update or higher.

Upgrade to D365 CE 9.0. Would recommend going the latest update.

    Some limited advice available

Upgrade a Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server | Microsoft Docs

Plan your upgrade to Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2016 Server | Microsoft Docs

This contains system requirements for 9.X and also links to previous system requirements.

Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement (on-premises) system requirements and required technologies | Microsoft Docs

Also the following for further clarification on SQL requirements for 2016

Compatibility with Dynamics CRM 2016 - Dynamics CRM | Microsoft Docs

You might notice that, in regards to SQL, we identify SQL 2012 compatible with 2013,2015, and 2016 versions of CRM. So it is conceivable that you could make it through these three versions on the same SQL version.

    I hope this helps.
