Using Assembly Orders to trigger MRP

We are wanting to use Assembly Orders for some of our kitting.  I am trying to figure out if you put an item on a Sales Order that is an assembly part, will it trigger MRP if you do not have the quantities available that are part of that Assembly BOM.  Is there something we need to do for these to trigger an MRP run on these Assembly BOM components that are not available in inventory?
