Hi Rob, thanks for reaching out on forums, we should not have to continually re-enter the app ID, unless this is a new company, but we have a section of information on unknown error and what may case this in Dynamics GP and what to look at.
There are many reasons for the unknown error, I have them listed here, in our email troubleshooting guide.
If it is working for 1 user vs not another
Is it working on 1 machine and not another, that is what we need to drill into

Go down to the purple part and look at that list of items.
