NAV upgrade vs pending jobs

Posted on by 511

Hi all,

I am looking to find the standard NAV practice on this query if there is one.

Scenario: Upgrade from NAV 2009 to NAV 2016

Kick-off meeting: happened already and workshops are about to start

What if there is a pending job regarding the creation of a new company in the old database? What I usually do in such a case and from what I see from other professionals as a standard NAV practice, the old database is locked in a way after the kick-off meeting. Pending jobs are better to be implemented in the newly upgraded database.

What is your opinion on that?

Thanks,

If we are upgrading from one version to another version that time we are updating data also from one version to another and that time all the pending task will also carried to new version. Suggestion would be during data upgrade generally take 2 days down time and then upgrade data and of course nobody should not do any transaction in old db.

If we are cutting off old database and starting new database then we need to consider pending jobs specially in manufacturing industry where WIP POR ,pending PO's etc and in such case we suggest to finish POR in old system only.

depends on what the customer needs. if they need 24/7 availability, then they need to use the old database till the upgraded database is ready to use. in that case create the new company in the old db. the gap  (all new data, all postings) between the day,  with which the database was upgraded and the switch day, has then to be done a second time.

if they do not need the new company urgently then better create it in the new database.

the old database should be locked, when the employees start with the new database. after that only read access is allowed.

always make at least one or two test upgrades, measure the time it lasts, then you can say what is the stop time, the gap.

It depends on the nature and stage of the pending development... Also, to which extent those changes are business critical, is it possible to postpone them to new version. There also might be contractual obligations of previous partner which are part of the fixed fee contract, so it might be wise to fulfill them in the old database anyway. Also, there might be reasonable to finalize pending developments and upgrade them to newer version, if the upgrade will look straight forward. On the other hand, in new implementation some pending developments might not be needed at all - due to change in processes or covered by standard functionality of newer version. So, I'd have no direct answer to that - study is needed.
