Transfer Order and Transfer Journal inventory unit

Dear All,

Hi,

In transfer order, user wants to use different transfer units. In standard system, it transfers using inventory unit only. If inventory unit is made editable on transfer order or transfer journal;

1. Has someone experienced this kind of customization effects?

2. Will it work perfect from Financial point of view whether we use transfer order or transfer journal?

Regards,

Muhammad Fahad.

    If you simply make the UnitId field on InventTransferLine editable, bad things will happen.  Sales order and Purchase orders have quite a bit of business logic associated with keeping two units of measure (the "movement" unit of measure and the inventory unit of measure) straight all the time, and in particular the effect in inventory (the Qty on InventTrans) must be translated from the movement unit of measure according to the unit of measure conversion.  That's doesn't even consider the impact on printed reports and documents, such as the journals and shipping and receiving reports.  As far as modifications go, it's not impossible, but it's not trivial either.  But, to answer your question, do NOT simply make UnitId editable on the InventTransferLine record, as the system is not designed to treat this unit of measure in the same way as other kinds of orders.

    As far as I know, there isn't much different financially between an Inventory transfer order and an Inventory journal of type Transfer.  Both issue from one warehouse/site and receipt to another.  The Inventory transfer order has additional effects in the transit warehouse, which should be left 0 once the order is completed, so the end result of both should be identical though the transfer order has multiple steps to get there.

    Hello Muhammad, What I could think of in regards to the different transfer units you mention is the Catch Weight feature that allows you tracking more than a single unit per item. Probably have a look at TechNet for more details (technet.microsoft.com/.../hh242918.aspx). For No.2, Brandon is right, from a financial perspective it won't make a difference as you won't get a voucher created for inventory transfers within inventory sites. Hope this helps, Ludwig
