Dynamics AX 2012 R3 Setup with SQL Server 2014 and domain controller

I am currently attempting to set up Dynamics AX 2012 R3 on Windows Server 2012 R2 - and from what I understand AX requires the server uses a domain controller to work. I have enabled this and it works fine.

The problem is that I also need to install SQL Server 2014 on the same machine to use as the database which fails due to the system using a domain controller.

How can I install SQL Server on the same machine so that it will run properly / work fine with AX?

SQL server is not supported on a domain controller machine. So you need two separate machines.

AX requires a domain controller since it works with AD accounts. Offcourse you shouldn't install AX on the domain controller itself.

If you want a standalone enviroment i suggest you take a look at the demo images microsoft prepared.

Hi Brendan,

If you have installed Windows Server 2102 and considering virtual you can turn on hyper-v feature and Make Three VMs one running your AD service, one SQL service and last one for AX. Just make sure you consider your IOPs and Ram for the host.
