Serialize an item after it was created

Posted on by
Hi, there are a few items in GP that were created incorrectly.  The items need to be serialized and we can't figure out how to do this after the item was created.  There are already orders, backorders, completed orders, and invoices for the items.

The way I've always been told about this (and done this in the past) was you need to get all of the pending transactions finished (open POs waiting to receive or invoice, open sales orders waiting to ship, etc), adjust out any inventory that is on hand or whatever, and then GP will let you change the item tracking option to serialized or lot numbers and set it up.

Then you put your inventory back in (if there was any on hand) -- and going forward everything will be serialized.

Agree with Beat that Willoware has a nice add-on option for more flexibility with serial and lot tracked items.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi,
Here is a link to an old thread about this.. If I understand you correctly, you have already created the Items but not selected the option for Serial / Lot tracking ?
the flag could be changed behind the scene in the IV00101 table and then run a reconcile to have GP create an auto-generated serial number, then do adjustments as needed.

You may also want to look in ISV add-ons like Willoware that has tools to better handled serial / lot numbers in GP
Contact them and they might be able to help.
